Members of the FIRST Lego League (FLL) are aged 11- 16.
They build and program using Lego Technic and EV3 Lego brick to undertake up to 15 challenges in 2 1/2 minutes. Playing on a tabletop game map their robot must navigate unique Lego structures to score points. They must also produce a project based on the theme of the challenge. FIRST Lego League teams are judge highly on teamwork, the project and robot design. Students are encouraged to work together and undertake research for their project. Team members are also required to learn the core values of FIRST.
Our FLL team have won the Robot Design award twice and the robot competition in 2017.
Members of the First Tech Challenge (FTC) are aged 15-18. They are getting into the more complex stuff!
Under the guidance of mentors, the team are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge. Our members use a standard competition kit (reused each year) to design and build a robot to meet the challenge released by FIRST in September. Team members develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles (like keeping an engineering notebook) while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. Team members also must raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach for which they can win awards. Our team flies up to Sydney to compete against teams from all around Australia.
The competition takes place under the guiding value of FIRST, Gracious Professionalism. With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended.
The skills and knowledge gained by our FTC team go far beyond being handy with a screwdriver and using programming languages. The experiences our team members have will benefit them in whatever path their future life takes them on. As well as giving them memories to last a lifetime.
Our FTC team is an award-winning team who has been competing in Sydney since 2013 and have won numerous awards.
Members of the FIRST Robotics Competiton (FRC) team are aged 16 – 18 yrs.
Members move from FLL to FTC to FRC. FRC build bigger more complex robots and moving up is dependent on the students ability, teamwork particiant and age.
